Stanley Peter

Prof. Peter Stanley, FAHA, of UNSW Canberra is one of Australia?s most distinguished military social historians.

He was formerly Principal Historian at the Australian War Memorial, where he worked from 1980 to 2007.

Peter has published over 30 books, mostly in Australian military history, but also in the military history of British India, the history of surgery, bushfires and battlefield research.

His book, Bad Characters: Sex, Crime, Murder, Mutiny and the Australian Imperial Force was jointly awarded the Prime Minister?s Prize for Australian History in 2011.

Peter is a frequent contributor to the media in commenting on history, and is past president of the community body Honest History, which has offered a critique of the ?Anzackery? in Australia.

He has made many references to Lemnos in his several books about the Gallipoli campaign, including in his 2011 novel for children, Simpson?s Donkey.
