Peter Katsambanis

Peter Katsambanis was elected to the Parliament of Western Australia as the Member for Hillarys at the 2017 State Election. He currently holds the shadow portfolios of Police; Road Safety; Industrial Relations.

Peter is the Chairman of the Community Development and Justice Standing Committee of the Legislative Assembly.

In July 2017, Peter was elected President of the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association. 

Prior to his election as the Member for Hillarys, Peter was a Member of the Legislative Council representing the North Metropolitan Region from 2013.

During his term in the Upper House, Peter vigorously represented Perth's northern suburbs in Parliament. He also served as Deputy Chairman of the Estimates and Financial Operations Committee and was also a member of the Joint Standing Committee on Delegated Legislation.

Prior to 2013, Peter was Chief of Staff to Hon Peter Collier MLC, Minister for Education; Energy and Indigenous Affairs. Previously he was Senior Policy Adviser to Senator Mathias Cormann, Shadow Assistant Treasurer and Shadow Minister for Financial Services and Superannuation.

Peter holds Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Commerce degrees from the University of Melbourne and worked as a lawyer in the financial services industry before being elected to the Parliament of Victoria in 1996 as the Liberal Member for Monash Province.

During his time in the Victorian Parliament, Peter chaired an inquiry into the Victorian Evidence Act and was a member of the Law Reform Committee. He also served as Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Industrial Relations. Peter is the only person to have served in the parliaments of both Victoria and Western Australia. He is also the only parliamentarian to have represented the Liberal Party in two states.

From 2003 to 2009 Peter was a presiding Tribunal Member on the Refugee Review Tribunal and the Migration Review Tribunal where he developed significant expertise in dealing with complex migration and refugee legal issues.

In 2010, Peter moved to Perth with his family to establish a legal practice specialising in business migration law.

He has been active in community affairs having held many volunteer positions including Chairman of the Australian Greek Welfare Society, Board Member of Korowa Anglican Girls School, Senior Staff Officer of the State Emergency Service and a member of the Australian Liberal Students Federation Executive.

For his service to the community, Peter has been awarded the National Certificate of Merit with Gold Badge from the Returned and Services League (RSL) and the Meritorious Service Medal from the Australian Red Cross.

Peter lives in Hillarys with his wife, Karalee, and their three children.

Apart from politics, Peter's interests include football, cricket, current affairs and travel.
